In 2004, we began publishing our Midwest College Guide as a part of our city magazine, QC Magazine (www.qcmag.com). Anxious to provide helpful information to our readers, we had talked with area parents, high schools and students about how our magazine could help in planning for college. As we gathered information, we discovered that about 70 percent of all students wind up going to a college within 250 miles of their home. Our readers are from the Midwest, so we naturally focused on the great variety of Midwestern colleges and universities. Armed with information, we began including in our magazine an annual college directory to help students begin their search with basic information about their many college options. We provided contact information for colleges and featured their web addresses. We ran stories about how to prepare for college and did our best to point students and parents in the right direction for finding out more about financial help, academic preparation and college life.
Six years later, after once again consulting with high school guidance counselors, colleges, students and parents, we discovered that today’s students and parents are most likely to begin their college search online. In response, we offer you www.midwestcollegeguide.com, our website and digital guide.
We know that choosing a college is a huge decision for both students and their parents. Students want to get the most out of their college experience, so narrowing the choices of colleges to visit is important. The colleges featured in the Midwest College Guide are predominately in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri. We solicit over 250 colleges each year and ask that they submit their listing information at no charge. We hire an intern each summer to call and email colleges in an effort to keep this information up to date. This year, over 100 colleges chose to participate.
In time, we’d like to include more than 200 Midwestern colleges and universities in a five-state area and link over 150 regional high schools. We will continue to write and accept articles that will prove informational to students and their parents with regard to searching for and finding the college that is right for them. We want students who are 18 years and older to register to win exciting prizes each quarter and opt to provide contact information so that they can receive specific college information based on criteria they indicate. Our ultimate plan is to build an interactive student forum so that high school students can ask college students questions about the colleges they attend.
Please explore and enjoy the Midwest College Guide. We want and need your feedback so that we can build a better informational website and improve the content we provide you. Please send your comments and questions to info@midwestcollegeguide.com. We’d love to hear from you.
Thank you,
